Fall 2010 Museum News:
Our museum had a very busy summer filled with museum conservation projects and exciting surprises! We had a remarkable artwork donation from Mr. Bob Thornton and Mrs. Karen Ross. The donation is an untitled A.C. Leighton watercolour dated from 1924 and was sent all the way from Kent, England to join our permanent collection. It is a wonderful example of A.C. Leighton’s formative years as a young artist in England. Please visit the gallery to view the new acquisition; we plan to have it on display very soon. Special thanks to Mr. Paul Squires for the archival reframing of the piece.
This fall we are hoping to complete the digitization of the Leighton Collection. We must thank Miss Melissa Cole for all of her hard work on this large and very daunting project.
We all know our magnificent view from the great room windows is easy on the eyes, but did you know the bright light is hard on artwork? We have applied for another project grant from the Alberta Museums Association to install UV film on the windows in the Great Room. The installation of UV film will enable us to display the light sensitive artworks from the Leighton permanent collection
We were approved by the Canadian Heritage Information Network’s Community Memories Program to create our own online exhibit about the Leightons. If you have any favourite stories that you would like to share with us please call Megan at 403-931-3633 or email megank@leightoncentre.org
Museum
The former home and property of Albertan artists A.C. and Barbara Leighton was bequeathed to cultivate an appreciation of art through the use of its assets. The museum mandate is to establish, maintain and operate an art centre to foster education in the arts and to preserve and exhibit its assets for the public and future generations.

The Leighton Art Centre’s eighty acre property offers some of the most beautiful vistas in western Canada. The property situated on the crest of a hill southwest of Calgary overlooks the adjacent foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Many visitors coming for the first time are astounded by the utter beauty of the landscape.
Built in the 1950’s the Leighton Home portrays a predominantly ‘English Country’ style. Designed by A.C. Leighton himself the home beautifully lends itself to the landscape with absorbing views from every direction. A.C. Leighton built his home in a cruciform shape with a central tower to view the magnificent landscape from any direction. The ‘Leighton Residence’ is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays, year round. It features some of the original furniture that was designed and built by A. C. Leighton, personal artifacts, permanent exhibitions that tell the story of A. C. and Barbara, and changing exhibitions of works by Alberta landscape artists. The collection has holdings of art works by both A. C. Leighton and Barbara. In addition, the collection includes works of art by friends and contemporaries of the Leighton’s.
The Leighton Art Centre is a member of Museums Alberta / Alberta Museums Association.
Exhibit Links to the Permanent Collection:
Several of our exhibitions are carefully chosen to provide a link to our Permanent Collection enabling us to tell the stories of A.C. Leighton and Barbara Leighton.
