Fall 2011 Museum News:
The Leighton Art Centre’s Storage Upgrade Project
We were recently awarded a grant to upgrade the storage of the Leighton collection and are asking other museums and cultural institutions for their suggestions when undertaking this type of project. If you or your organization has recently upgraded your collection storage we would love to hear from you. We need advice regarding the projects execution, help to source suppliers for the project and general collections storage advice. Please contact us and let us know how your project went and what you would recommend to us when undertaking our project. Please contact Megan via phone or email at megank@leightoncentre.org or call 403-931-3633.
Volunteers wanted for our collection re-storage project!
Can you help us on our new collection storage upgrade project? We are looking for volunteers interested in art conservation and/or sewing skills. Some of the projects we are working on include covering hat stands with fabric, sewing dust covers for exposed collection shelving and cutting archival chloroplast into dividers for the artwork. Please let me know if you want to help out! Email me at megank@leightoncentre.org
Museum
The former home and property of Albertan artists A.C. and Barbara Leighton was bequeathed to cultivate an appreciation of art through the use of its assets. The museum mandate is to establish, maintain and operate an art centre to foster education in the arts and to preserve and exhibit its assets for the public and future generations.

The Leighton Art Centre’s eighty acre property offers some of the most beautiful vistas in western Canada. The property situated on the crest of a hill southwest of Calgary overlooks the adjacent foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Many visitors coming for the first time are astounded by the utter beauty of the landscape.
Built in the 1950’s the Leighton Home portrays a predominantly ‘English Country’ style. Designed by A.C. Leighton himself the home beautifully lends itself to the landscape with absorbing views from every direction. A.C. Leighton built his home in a cruciform shape with a central tower to view the magnificent landscape from any direction. The ‘Leighton Residence’ is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays, year round. It features some of the original furniture that was designed and built by A. C. Leighton, personal artifacts, permanent exhibitions that tell the story of A. C. and Barbara, and changing exhibitions of works by Alberta landscape artists. The collection has holdings of art works by both A. C. Leighton and Barbara. In addition, the collection includes works of art by friends and contemporaries of the Leighton’s.
The Leighton Art Centre is a member of Museums Alberta / Alberta Museums Association.
Exhibit Links to the Permanent Collection:
Several of our exhibitions are carefully chosen to provide a link to our Permanent Collection enabling us to tell the stories of A.C. Leighton and Barbara Leighton.
