Long fascinated by layers of material and meaning, AlbertaCollegeOfArt+Design graduate and Calgary native, Sharon Hogg melds deeply textured constructed canvases with transparent imagery into two dimensional works of art. Her paintings contemplate energy and environment, searching for the connection between first sensing, and then coming to understand, the natural energies at play in our environments. Throughout her work there is an ongoing material tie to the lands of “her Canada”, specifically the prairies and foothills of Alberta and the wild rocky shores of Ontario. Her strongly graphic landscapes hint at an unexpected depth; an unexpected material connection to the land. No surprise then, that such “simple” landscapes inspire such a softly spoken sense of intrigue.
