Come and spend the day with Karen Biko at the beautiful Leighton Art Centre! Learn all about the fluid and brilliant medium of Alcohol Ink
Karen will lead you through some fun experimentation as you work with Alcohol Inks. These fluid brilliant inks create some almost magical abstract designs. In this workshop, you will create several small finished paintings that will be ready to frame! In addition, Karen will show you some other fun ways to use Alcohol Inks. If you have learned this medium before, or if you are a beginner, there is something for everyone.
Alcohol inks are an ideal introduction to working in an abstract style as they are such a free-flowing medium. You will work with a range of vibrant and translucent colours. Through experimenting and exploring with your choice of colours you’ll learn how to create depth and balance within the composition.
We begin with a brief demo and discussion of various techniques. Participants will experiment and create their own masterpieces. This is a good way to let go of your control and see what the inks do on your paper.
For this Workshop, all the supplies are included. However, if you are picky about being messy, you might want to bring a smock and gloves. Also, during the lunch hour, Karen will have a fun little bonus project, so if you have a sketchbook you can bring that too.
Audience: This workshop is suitable for adults and teens - Beginner and Up!
Supplies: All supplies are included. Please bring a sketchbook, pen/pencil, and a lunch, snack and water bottle!

Karen Biko is a Calgary artist who’s been exhibiting and selling art in Alberta for years. Inspired at an early age while surrounded by art has always been a huge motivation and has motivated her to develop her own creative fashion. Formally trained as an Interior Designer, she continues to work with colour, space, and expression in her paintings. Her abstract style reflects emotion as well as a sense of humor. Always looking for new techniques and interesting aspects to add to paintings, Karen’s work is continually growing. From painting on paper to floppy discs, she can be found looking at everyday objects with a creative thought of “how can I use this?”As a prolific painter, Karen is always excited to try a new project. She has completed several multi-piece commissions, as well as led Public Community projects and events. She eagerly helps out with fundraising efforts and has appeared in many juried shows and events.
